August saw the retirement of popular WA TV personality, and valued WeatherWatch supporter, Jeff Newman. Jeff fulfilled a number of roles during his time at Channel Seven and presented the weather on Seven News for nine years. During this time he was integral to the development of the WeatherWatch partnership which brings together the Department of Environment and Conservation, Channel Seven Perth and 50 WA school communities each year. Each week night hundreds of students across the state, along with their teachers and parents, have delighted in the acknowledgement they received from Jeff. AirWatch staff wish Jeff Newman all the very best for a well-earned retirement. Below is a collection of well-wishes and tributes from past and present WeatherWatch schools:
"Dear Jeff,
We have been involved with AirWatch for many years and over those years you have always made the students look forward to watching the weather and hearing their names called out. Thanks so much for your wonderful contribution to Channel 7, our favourite station ... it won't be the same without your cheerful face on the screen.
From Sue Stevenson and the Year 6 students at Kingsway Christian College"
"Mr Newman,
We would like to say thank you and wish you a well deserved retirement. Thank you for the way you made us all feel special and tried to pronounce all our names correctly. Our whole school loves participating in WeatherWatch and this would not have happened without your cooperation. You were always happy and every night you read out our names as though it was your first night on the job. All the best for the future from all the students at St Joseph's in Northam."
"Mr Newman, Thank you for doing the weather and the WeatherWatch too! We like doing the weather and we like watching TV when the weather comes on. Thank you from Mt Margaret RCS."
"Oh Mr Weatherman please be kind
Send us some rain if you don’t mind
We need the rain not a shower
They only send out the power.
Oh Mr Weatherman the rain is a must
At the moment we can’t see anything but dust
Not hail, not wind, not snow
Rain is the only thing that will make things grow
Oh Mr Weatherman you’re our mate
Nightly you give the weather for our state.
So all we ask is for some rain
And we will see our Mums and Dads smile again.
Each night we sit in front of the screen
To hear Mr Newman mention places we have never seen.
Week 6 or 8 are our Weather Watch weeks
We check each day to see where the thermometer peaks
The weather is just not going to be the same
Without that nice man with the Newman name
Off to retirement he is going
Travelling the state and other places unknown.
Happy retirement and thanks for the Memories Badgingarra Primary School."
